Description
Circa 1880s antique advertising print printer's copper block advertising piece, hand engraved. This was used for advertising The Elephant & Castle, House of Refreshment by James Robertson 209 Washington Street, New York near Washington Market (which I read was near Greenwich). This is an interesting piece of artwork / print work. It measures 7 x 9 and made of heavy copper. The front has the engraving of the traditional Elephant & Castle logo, known for pubs in Europe, such as Britain. I researched but I didn't find much information about this business in New York historical records. I found a few hits of the name and address in the late 1880s. It looks like it was made for advertising posters, for use in magazines or newspapers. The even more interesting part is there are two maker stamps on the back. One corner is JUERY Jacques No 43 in Paris. The other is J. JUERY in 30 Elm Street, N York (New York). This does have wear, it has surface scratches and discoloration as shown. The back has some residue stuck on (I think it is a rubber band) or other type of rubber substances. I've owned this for several years just because it was unusual, time for a new home. Originally purchased from an estate. Enjoy!
