What an amazing find and to have it being sold as a whole group is very unusual, they are normally sold by individual block. This would make a fantastic gift for those recent graduates that went to school for journalism or literature. Or be the perfect touch to anyones office to add texture to an otherwise flat wall.
I have done very little to this other than clean out the drawer and dust the letters. I left it in original condition for how I found it, but it would be stunning if the drawer was given a clear seal finish and then covered by glass or plexi to keep the blocks clean. Or you can use the blocks to decorate throughout your home and then used the drawer as a display space for your small collectables. No matter how you use it, this set is quite versatile and you can be as creative as you want with it!
Wood print blocks like these were used with a process called letterpress printing. This refers to the process of assembling each individual letter to form a word or sentence and then covering the blocks in ink and then manually pressing the block on to paper to impose the ink print. This process was used until the 1950's when faster, more economic techniques were introduced.
This set of blocks comes from the Grove Printing Corp. founded by William W. Grove in 1935 and remains operational to this day. The company is known for their social and commercial printings as well as Christmas Cards and Wedding Invitations.
This set of blocks were most likely no longer used and sold off by the company in the 1940's-1950's when they switched to newer printing machines and techniques.
The letters themselves were produced in Guatemala, which can be seen on the makers sticker that is shown in photo 7.
What an amazing find and wonderful artistic piece that would look great in any home!
